e you at “waiting”? What emotions and feelings are exposed when you hear the words, “PLEASE WAIT”!
We all wait. It is entwined in our human existence. Waiting occurs every day and we can embrace it or rebel against it. In our hurried western culture we are addicted to fast – fast foods, instant replays, action addiction. Waiting implies non-activity but in God’s world what could waiting mean?
Our Catholic tradition invites us into periods of reflective waiting. During Advent, we wait for the coming of the birth of Jesus. Lent is a time of waiting for the resurrection of Jesus and Pentecost points to the promise of the Spirit.
We can approach these waiting times with the heaviness of chains (desolation) or the lightness of feathers (consolation) but whatever your waiting experience, it can be an opportunity for a unique encounter with God.
I waited with excited anticipation during pregnancy; waited with unknown expectation with my dad while he was dying and am waiting for healing after surgery. While waiting, doors and windows into my heart were and are being opened.
What does God’s word have to tell us about waiting?
“Waiting on the Lord is hopeful anticipation of what God is going to do. It’s trusting that what He is going to do is worth the wait” (Adapted from Lamentations 3:25-26)
