Love and Water

LOVE and WATER:  (PART-1)

Tilt the table ever so slightly, and watch the water on it move. It will flow to where it can flow no more, always finding its level. It flows until it is blocked. It waits for something to happen, anything that will allow it to flow again. Always patiently ready to go further, it needs no rest. It waits to go beyond its present limits, to new areas, new places. To soften what is hard. To sustain the parched. To bring wet to what is dry.

The desert is the metaphor of water and life. An arid desert seems lifeless, but after a desert rain wonderfully tiny flowers appear out of prickly green stumps. Desert animals come out of nowhere and coyotes call to each other in the night. Hummingbirds come to sip on flowers’ nectar, and waxy leaves burst out of sleeping buds in the economy of water. Life that was always there comes out of hiding.

Love moves like water. It will flow to where it can flow no more, always finding its level. It flows until it is blocked. It waits for something to happen, anything that will allow it to flow again. Always patiently ready to go further, it needs no rest. It waits to go beyond its present limits, to new areas, new places. To soften what is hard. To sustain the lonely. To bring light to the darkness. To bring life to the dead.

Our lives are a metaphor of love and of life. Burdened by the worries of this world, we drag ourselves along, seemingly lifeless, certainly joyless. Yet every now and then, love somehow pierces our life-toughened hide, whether through love received or love observed. Love breaks through somehow, spontaneously, to make its presence felt. It reaches us, and finds its way inside despite our defences. Love’s way is a mystery.

It awakens the stress-drugged soul within us. It is oxygen in the smothering heap of our troubles. It is a periscope we thrust into the air from the weariness of our work and worry… to see sunshine again, and to allow beauty and truth to affect us again. We dare to participate in relationship again, even if as tentative as a swimmer dipping his toe to test the water.

Love, like water, is there, ready to move to a new level, to find a new place in our soul. It seeks the dry and parched. It searches for what may seem lifeless but is ready and waiting to awaken. Love is ready. Love is always ready.
