Always Becoming
One of the sounds of summer that I love is water sprinkling on the fresh cut grass and children’s squeals of delight as they run through it.
The other day a phrase popped into my head … “water, water everywhere and nary a drop to drink!” It was one of my mom’s sayings and I wondered where this phrase had come from! After looking it up I found that it was written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge in his poem “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner”. The speaker is a sailor on a becalmed ship surrounded by salt water that he cannot drink. These words are used to describe a situation in which someone is in the midst of plenty but cannot partake of it.
This sometimes happens to people as they age or as their circumstances change. They begin to have difficulty with life and rather than risk failure or disappointment they simply give up.
Brother David Steindl-Rast in his book “Gratefulness the Heart of Prayer” says ““Heart vision” sees that the whole world and all we find within it ultimately gratuitous. All is gift and so we respond simply with “Gratefulness””.
Help me Lord to remember to move forward each day. …..to fill my time well! To make myself available and to find joy in the Grandeur of God. Summer comes and goes too quickly as does life. Holy Spirit help me always “Taste and See” the Goodness of the Lord!
