Catholic schools participate in the evangelizing mission of the Church. As such, in order for teachers to implement the evangelistic mission of Catholic schools, they themselves need an integral formation that puts every dimension of their human nature—body, emotions, will, and intellect—in ongoing Communion with Christ through His Church.
To that end, ACSTA has taken the initiative to facilitate Teachers as Missionary Disciples: Forming Witnesses for Catholic Schools. This Symposium invites the Catholic education community to engage in discussion that will inform the development of a conceptual framework to assist the Church and Her schools in Alberta, Yukon and the NWT in providing for the formation of pre- and in-service teachers. The Symposium will bring together leading researchers in the field, who will make presentations of their conceptual and empirical work and engage the community in formulating possible structures, best practices, and strategies for faith formation for staff.
What: Catholic Education Symposium: Teachers as Missionary Disciples: Forming Witnesses for Catholic Schools
When: February 9-10, 2024
Where: Corpus Christi Parish Hall 2707 34 St NW, Edmonton AB
Who: Boards are encouraged to sponsor up to 10 people representing a cross section from their education community; especially religious education teachers and consultants, administrators, but also student leaders, parents, academics, parishioners, clergy, and trustees who have the knowledge, skills and formation to contribute to this activity.
Why: The expected outcome is an opportunity to dialogue with stakeholders and create a resource that supports the formation of preservice and in-service teachers that can be used for recruitment of pre-service teachers, best practices in faith formation and professional development for in-service teachers at the school, division, and provincial levels. This may serve as a template for the creation of faith formation assurance models and documents to enhance the formation of Christian witnesses in our schools.
